How many people have gone the regular route…judging a book by its cover? That weird feeling of drawing conclusions based on the most flimsy of items, or perceptions, colour, language, race, gender, dressing, religion, facial expressions et al?
But in all these, we forget the binding force….our COMMON HUMANITY. It binds like nothing else on the outside.
So the story goes….
You are in one huge international airport….with multiple boarding gates…almost hearing the last boarding announcement….you are out of breath…confused about the correct gate for boarding., impatient to look at any screens to confirm. Then next to you is this beautiful soul and desperately you ask her where she is headed and she too blurts out your destination…both of you are headed to the same aircraft.
Then she tells you she had gone back to the Duty Free shops for last minute shopping. Then stretches her hand to assist you with your hand luggage… 📷👝📷👜
Two of you keep running literarily to the gate but she keeps reassuring you…”oh..we will make it..do not worry…we will make it”. Instead of rushing off and leaving you behind, she keeps pausing and waiting for you with encouraging words…
All this time…she keeps telling you her husband and kids had already boarded….but she keeps waiting for you to meet her up…”oh dear…go, you might miss your flight”, I advise
“Noo, we are together”…we will make it she encourages still…
Then thankfully, both of us made it into the aircraft….
In the excitement you two rush to your different seats…no name exchanges…no phone numbers but just an imprint of how total strangers can display exceptional acts of kindness, love and selflessness.
My friend is from Afghanistan….the only information I have of her…
But today, I remember her generosity of spirit. She could have rushed off to the aircraft to join her family…but she spared a thought for a total stranger…Kindness binds the human spirit in ways we can neither understand nor explain. Neither race, class or religion defines us…our humanity does. What a wonderful world full of beautiful people?
So as the world celebrates International Day of Peace. I remembered my nameless friend and thought… what is we all related just as human race without the division of religion and race and gender and tribe and continents?
Then as I think of today as International Day of peace, I remember my high school days when some sects in the Christian Church; Scripture Union and Deeper life students would not interact with us (sinners) and would refuse to assist us plait our hair or even give us a cup of water…
Then juxtapose them with my few minutes Muslim friend…who would I remember with eternal fondness?
Then even now in social and political fields in Nigeria, , there are Christians discriminating between Catholics, Anglicans, Jehova Witnesses, Pentecostals, Methodists, Baptists etc and all shades of hypocritical puritanic dispositions. Then here I am, with a human being, behind a veil reaching out in friendship…the paradox of life and living
WHAT IF KINDNESS WAS A RELIGION? WHAT IF THE KINDNESS SHE SHOWED ME WAS SHOWN BY EVERYONE?What if?….
PEACE IS POSSIBLE IN OUR WORLD…HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE PEOPLE… 📷🤝📷🤝📷✌️📷✌️
